New Park Rangers take to Sea Point Promenade

Visitors to Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade may notice some new faces patrolling the popular walkway. A dedicated team of Park Rangers has been deployed to enhance safety and protect the area’s green spaces, offering peace of mind to thousands of daily walkers, joggers, and families.

Ward Councillor Nicola Jowell confirmed that the initiative has been in place since early August, with rangers working 24-hour shifts, seven days a week, as reported by IOL.

“Many residents have already seen them on their patrols and sent me comments that they are noticing a positive impact from the Rangers already. They will be on the Promenade 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,” Jowell said.

Supporting law enforcement and protecting public spaces

The new rangers will assist the City Parks Department in addressing bylaw infringements, tackling littering, and safeguarding public property. Four rangers are on duty per shift, with numbers set to fluctuate based on demand.

“The parks department contracted with Rangers as a project to add to the security and management of the Promenade from Sea Point through to Mouille Point,” explained Jowell.

She added:

“This is a very positive step that will go a long way to assist the excellent work that law enforcement has been doing. But like law enforcement, they cannot be everywhere all the time, and the Promenade is a very big space, but you will certainly see them on your visit.”

Visible presence and direct response

The rangers, identifiable in khaki uniforms, are equipped with radios linked directly to a central call centre, allowing them to request backup if needed.

Their presence comes after several robberies were reported earlier this year, including the arrest of a 24-year-old man following the assault and robbery of a German tourist. The initiative aims to reduce such incidents while improving the overall visitor experience.

Cape Town residents have already expressed gratitude on social media, welcoming the initiative as a much-needed boost for one of the city’s most beloved public spaces.
