President says accommodation for leisure travel not allowed

Posted on 11 July 2020

In a statement made on Saturday [July 11] President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that accommodation for leisure travel is not allowed under Alert Level 3.

He said an error had been made in an infographic released on Friday [July 10] that said accommodation for leisure travel is permitted.

‘Here are the activities that are now allowed at Level 3. We picked up an error in the previous graphic which suggested that accommodation for leisure travel was permitted. This is not the case,’ read a tweet from the President’s official account.

Getaway spoke to Natalia Rosa from South Africa is Travel Ready about the latest announcement: ‘The Tourism private sector has sought high-level legal opinion and is investigating options. The COGTA regulations have not been changed and those do not ban intra-provincial travel for leisure. Until these have been updated, that is what will continue to guide industry.’
