South African coastline battered by high swells over weekend

Posted on 18 September 2023 By Jordyn Johnson

Storm surges and high swells battered South African coastal communities over the weekend, 16 and 17 September, flooding homes and businesses and sweeping away cars.

Videos and pictures ‘flooded’ social media platforms on Saturday and Sunday as big waves washed up onto roads and lifted cars parked close to the beach.

Rescue teams throughout the Eastern and Western Cape and KZN did a superb job keeping the public safe.

Officials advise the public to stay clear of affected areas and are urged to practice caution around seafronts.
