Should you have a to-do list

Posted on 5 August 2010

You wouldn’t think that being the editor of Africa’s longest standing travel magazine would leave you envious of the travels and adventures of your friends and colleagues. Strangely it does and of late I’ve been going a deeper shade of green every time one of my journos and friends heads off on their next adventure. Of course it’s all my fault.

I have come to realise that the secret to travel lies in the planning. The better the travel planning and the more organised your calender the harder it is not to travel. Contrast that with waiting to see when you’ll get a break. I ask you, when did you last get a break? Thought so.

Truth is you need to sit down religiously with a holiday calender and look at the year/years ahead and block off the bits of your life you intend to make your own. It’s about ordering prioritties. On many occasions I have said that the memories you take to the grave are not those of a report finished on time, or a status review undertaken with due diligence, they are the moments when you escaped the shackles of work and everyday-life.

So no more envy. It’s time to put a plan into action. It’s time to make my own must-do-before-I-die-list and action it.
