5 must-visit food and crafts markets in Cape Town

The Mother City has plenty to offer, including some amazing food and crafts markets. Markets in Cape Town are a hit and are set up all over the city, catering to all kinds of foods and interests. Have a look below at these five must-visit markets when travelling through Cape Town.

1. V&A Food Market

 

If the V&A Food Market isn’t already on your vacation itinerary, it should be. Located in the heart of Cape Town, it’s the ideal location for travelers and shoppers to grab a bite and admire the scenery. Cuisine you can think of, you name it, they have it: ‘We showcase over 40 tenants with the finest local products and offer a platform for small business to launch trend concept food stores and bars alike. You can sit indoors when windy or quayside for sundowners.’ This market also offers live music.

2. Oranjezicht City Farm

Contrary to its name, this market is actually located at the Waterfront, and aims to make it as accessible as possible despite the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is no entrance fee, and traders keep prices as low as possible. The Oranjezicht City Farm market strives to create links between urban farming, and Cape Town’s history and heritage. They cater to a wide array of food options to ensure no one is left behind: ‘Catering for vegans and vegetarians, raw foodies, and customers who want wheat, gluten, sugar and dairy-free alternatives is important to us. We also sell indigenous and other plants, heirloom and organic seed and gardening products.’

Trading Hours: Saturdays – 08:15 – 14:00, Sundays – 09:00 – 14:00

3. Neighbourgoods Market @ Old Biscuit Mill

The Neighbourgoods markets boast traders in both clothes and food. They are dog-friendly, provided that the dog is on a leash. For cyclists, the market has recently installed bicycle racks and encourages visitors to make use of them. They provide a myriad of food choices: ‘We endeavour to cater for all food choices. Halaal, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten and Sugar-free, Lactose – Intolerant, Raw and Organic food preferences are all represented.’ They also encourage visitors to advise them if they feel their food choices are not being catered to.

4. Cape Town Market

This fresh produce market is one of the oldest and largest fresh produce markets in South Africa. They have also been hosting the Voice of the Cape Festival since 2006: ‘The three-day cultural event happens each spring and is aimed at bridging the divide between local communities and big business. Over 60,000 visitors attend the festivities held at the Cape Town Market each year, where they are entertained with exhibitions, food and fun activities.’

5. Bay Harbour Market

 

 

Their motto is eats, beats, arts & crafts. They set the stage for local musicians and strive to create a vibrant experience for all: ‘Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay is a celebration of the vibrancy, spirit and diversity of creativity and culture that make South Africa such a unique country. It provides a uniquely social shopping and eating experience in an atmosphere which is friendly, vibrant and entertaining…. and, above all, distinctly South African!’ They include a wide variety of foods, as well as clothing, jewellery, and many artworks.
