9 things you didn’t know you could do in the Karoo

Posted on 15 October 2025 By Lee-Ann Steyn

Stretching across much of South Africa’s interior, the Karoo is a landscape that defies easy definition: half desert, half dreamscape. It’s known for silence, stars, and endless horizons. But beyond its solitude lies a surprising diversity of experiences.

Here are nine things you probably didn’t know you could do in the Karoo, adventures that take you beyond the expected gravel roads and windmills.

1. Soak under the stars in a wood-fired hot tub

The Karoo’s dry air and star-filled skies make it one of the best stargazing spots on Earth. At Africamps at Karoo 1 near De Doorns, you can sink into a private wood-fired hot tub, glass of local wine in hand, while the Milky Way arches overhead. As the desert cools, the warmth of the tub and the glow of the fire create the kind of silence you can actually hear.

Tip: Visit in winter when the nights are clearest and the air is crisp, perfect for star photography.

2. Hike hidden trails above Graaff-Reinet

Forget the crowded viewpoints. The Spandau Kop Trail in Camdeboo National Park rewards early risers with cinematic Karoo vistas, wildlife sightings and solitude. The less-known Game Viewing Hill trail loops through arid slopes dotted with aloe and acacia, where kudu and gemsbok blend into the rocks. These short routes reveal a wilder side of Graaff-Reinet, often overlooked in favour of the Valley of Desolation.

Tip: Stop by the Karoo Connections coffee cart afterwards for an espresso brewed with borehole water — local flavour at its finest.

3. Discover the desert’s secret garden

The Karoo isn’t barren; it’s bursting with biodiversity. Botanists classify it as one of the world’s richest succulent biomes. Explore the Ria Huysamen Aloe Garden near Prieska, or wander through Tankwa Karoo National Park, where the earth itself blooms in surreal hues after rare rains. Even the driest plains can surprise you with a burst of crimson vygies or the sculptural silhouettes of quiver trees.

Tip: The best time for floral surprises is late August to October, after winter rains.

4. Kayak across a desert dam

Yes, you can paddle in the desert. Vanderkloof Dam, South Africa’s second largest, offers tranquil blue water set against burnt-orange hills. Rent a kayak or join a guided paddle to explore secret coves and birdlife along the shoreline. When the water is still, it mirrors the vast sky so perfectly that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Tip: Early morning paddles are magical. The light turns everything gold, and fish eagles call from the cliffs.

5. Cycle through rewilded conservancies

For gravel bikers and adventure cyclists, the Karoo is a playground. The Karoo Gariep Conservancy near Hanover offers marked routes through koppies, plains and dry riverbeds. It’s a chance to experience the land’s subtle shifts in colour and texture and perhaps spot springbok racing alongside you. End your ride with a farmhouse breakfast or sundowner on the stoep.

Tip: Carry extra water and a GPS. The distances are deceiving in the open plains.

6. Join a real cattle drive

Trade the tourist trail for farm boots. With Karoo Ranching, you can join multi-day cattle drives and learn the rhythms of ranch life. You’ll help move livestock across the veld, share hearty meals around a fire, and sleep under a blanket of stars. It’s travel as participation, not just observation.

Tip: These experiences book up months in advance and typically take place between April and September, when the weather is cooler.

7. Go on a conservation safari at Samara

The Samara Karoo Reserve near Graaff-Reinet is rewilding over 67,000 hectares of degraded farmland. Instead of chasing the Big Five, guests encounter cheetah on foot, track aardvark by spotlight, and learn about grassland restoration. It’s a safari stripped back to intimacy, where every encounter feels meaningful.

Tip: Ask to join a conservation walk with one of Samara’s ecologists for an education in how ecosystems heal.

8. Stargaze in some of the clearest skies on Earth

With its low light pollution and dry air, the Karoo’s night sky rivals anywhere on the planet. Many lodges, including Klein Karoo Game Lodge, offer guided stargazing sessions using telescopes to view planets, nebulae and constellations invisible in the city. Or simply lie back on a rooftop deck, far from any town lights, and count shooting stars until you lose track.

Tip: For the ultimate cosmic experience, visit the SALT Observatory in Sutherland, South Africa’s astronomical heart.

9. Explore small-town art and “feather palaces”

Between the open spaces are towns with big personalities. In Oudtshoorn, you’ll find mansions from the ostrich-feather boom — ornate “feather palaces” that tell stories of Victorian excess. In Prince Albert, artists and chefs have transformed old buildings into galleries, delis and studios. Everywhere, there’s creativity carved into the Karoo’s quiet corners, from tin-roof theatres to poetry nights in old barns.

Tip: Visit during a local market weekend — it’s when these communities come alive.

The Karoo rewards curiosity

The Karoo isn’t about ticking off attractions; it’s about discovering what’s hidden in plain sight. Whether you’re paddling across a desert dam, joining a cattle drive, or stargazing in silence, you’ll find that the Karoo’s greatest treasure isn’t what it offers. It’s how it slows you down enough to notice.
