Safety is a crucial part of travel. Although exploring is great fun, you also have to ensure that you are safe while enjoying what your chosen destination has to offer. Whether you are travelling locally or internationally, safety should always be a priority.

If you are planning your next trip and wondering how to travel safely, consider these few tips:

Keep copies of important documents

You never know when you may need a copy of your passport or any other important document. Ensure that you have several copies printed, as well as some digital copies stored on your device. Should it happen that the original document is lost or misplaced, the copies will come in handy.

Refrain from looking too flashy

Wearing expensive and flashy jewellery can very easily make you a target for criminals. This is especially the case if you are at crowded places, or areas which are generally known to be unsafe. Rather, stick to a simple look that won’t draw too much attention.

Watch your alcohol intake

Enjoying yourself and exploring the nightlife of your chosen destination is lovely. However, it is important to drink responsibly. Keep an eye on your drink at all times, and ensure that you do not over-indulge. Being drunk makes you an easy target for robbery, scams and other forms of criminality.

Never keep all of your money in one place

Although thinking of the worst case scenario is the last thing you want to be doing when on holiday, precautionary measures are important. Keep your cash and cards in different places. This way, you will not be left completely empty-handed should one stash be stolen.

Where possible, stay away from public Wi-Fi

Although public Wi-Fi can provide the convenience of internet access, using it is not always safe. Hackers looking to steal valuable information can access your credit card data and other private details when you are connected to public Wi-Fi.

Communicate with friends and family

Communicating your whereabouts is an important aspect of safety on your travels. Before your departure, you can send a copy of your itinerary to one or two trusted individuals. When on your trip, be sure to check in regularly with your contacts too.
