Tips for planning the perfect mid-year getaway

Posted on 9 April 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

The halfway mark of 2024 is fast approaching. For many people, this means a mid-year break which will leave them feeling rested, refreshed and refueled to tackle the remainder of the year.

Whether it’s a getaway with a filled and fun itinerary, or simply a tranquil stay where rest is the order of each day, mid-year breaks can be highly beneficial.

If you are planning to pack your bags to embark on a mid-year break, here are a few tips to consider.

Make your bookings as early as possible

Once you have chosen your desired destination, start booking flights and accommodation as soon as possible. Mid-year can be a very busy time as many people seek to go away to rest and refuel. Booking early will help you plan better and decrease the chance of disappointment.

Have a travel goal in mind

It is important to be clear on what you would like to achieve from your mid-year getaway. For some, it might be nothing but relaxation. For others, it might be to explore and engage in adrenaline-filled activities. Know what you would like to get out of your holiday, as well as the type of experience you would like to have. This will make your planning easier and your holiday more enjoyable.

Take care of the practical

When planning to travel, it is always advisable to get the practical things out of the way as early as possible. This includes getting someone to look after your home or making arrangements for your pets. Leaving this until the last minute can cause unnecessary stress.

Pack appropriately

Packing for a trip, vacation

While mid-year is freezing cold in South Africa, other parts of the world enjoy summer during that time. If you will be travelling internationally, do not make the mistake of forgetting to check the weather. It is also important to ensure that you pack all the appropriate clothing which you will need for your various activities, as well as any medication that you may need to take along.

Include time for reflection and gratitude

Mid-year is the perfect time to review the goals which you set in January. Thus, it is essential to set aside some reflection time on your itinerary. This is when you will examine what you’ve been able to achieve thus far, practice gratitude and look into steps that still need to be taken for the remainder of the year.

It is also the chance to assess whether there are any changes that need to take place due to certain goals no longer being relevant, or as a result of a change in circumstance.

Consider going tech-free

In today’s digital world, we are often reliant on technology for work and the overall convenience of our daily lives. If you are feeling burnt out, your mid-year break may be the perfect opportunity to unplug. A digital detox can do wonders when it comes to refreshing and resetting your brain.

Save something fun for the end

Ensure that you end off your trip on a high note. You can schedule an exciting or relaxing activity for the very last day. This will give you something to look forward to, while also ensuring that you return from your mid-year break in high spirits.
