Posted on 10 June 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

When the wait between two connecting flights is long, this can be quite an inconvenience. However, there are some great ways to make the most of your time.

Depending on exactly how long your layover is, you can put your time to good use by enjoying a number of relaxing, interesting and insightful activities. After all, long layovers should not drain the joy out of your entire travel experience.

Here are some of the best ways to put those long layovers to good use:

Enjoy some window shopping

Most international airports offer world-class shopping experiences. Window shopping is an excellent way to kill time at the airport. Feasting your eyes on what different stores have to offer can serve as the best free entertainment.

Have conversations and make friends

The airport is a great place to meet new people. Fellow travellers often have interesting stories to tell. Why not talk to a stranger? You could end up making a special connection or forming a friendship which is real and meaningful.

Dive into some meditation

The art of meditation is an amazing way to recharge in-between flights. It is also an excellent way to release any travel nerves. Some airports have meditation rooms which offer a calm respite from the airport’s bustle. Even if you do not meditate, spending some quiet time in the calm environment is a highly beneficial way to spend your layover.

Read a good book

Reading is a good and beneficial habit. Immersing yourself in the pages of a good book can be your saving grace when you have time to kill at the airport. As such, it is advisable to pack a good book in your carry-on luggage.

Explore a new city

If your layover is half a day or more, you can embark on the exciting journey of exploring a new city. Some airports even have organised city tours which depart from the airport itself. Should this be something you decide to do, it is important to ensure that all your paperwork is in order as some countries will require you to have a visa to exit the airport.

Take time out to relax and freshen up

If your budget permits, book yourself into a transfer hotel where you can shower, rest and enjoy a nourishing meal. Purchasing a day pass to an airport lounge is also worth considering. This will afford you the chance to unwind, freshen up, enjoy some food, and use the free wifi.
