Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Peru

Carved into the Andes, this 42-kilometre path winds through cloud forests and past ancient ruins before revealing Machu Picchu. High altitude (4,215 metres at Dead Woman’s Pass) and steep climbs test your endurance, but the reward is totally unmatched. Secure permits early and aim for the dry season (May–September). Ambitious runners can join regional ultras, though the classic trail is still a bucket-list priority.

Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, France/Italy/Switzerland

This 171-kilometre loop circles Mont Blanc, crossing glacial valleys and alpine meadows in three different countries. With 10,000 metres of elevation gain, it’s a beast of a route, best tackled during July or September. Elite athletes flock to the UTMB race, but quieter sections like the Tour du Mont Blanc offer accessible day runs. Prepare for rapid weather shifts and technical terrain.

Routeburn Track, New Zealand

New Zealand’s 32-kilometre Routeburn Track threads through Fiordland’s UNESCO wilderness, passing sapphire lakes, waterfalls, and the spellbinding Southern Alps. Summer (November–April) gives you long daylight hours for soaking up views like Harris Saddle. Book huts in advance and watch for playful kea parrots overhead…

Table Mountain Trails, South Africa

The Mother City’s famous Table Mountain National Park offers amazing routes like the Pipe Track (coastal views) and the steep Platteklip Gorge (600-metre climb to the summit). They run year-round, but skip windy and rainy days. Post-run, cool off in Clifton Beach’s tidal pools or watch the sunset from Lion’s Head.

Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail, Japan

Follow emperors along Japan’s 64-kilometre Nakahechi route through cedar forests to sacred shrines. Spring cherry blossoms and autumn landscape makes for exceptionally beautiful times of year to visit. Unwind in ryokan inns (traditionally Japanese inns) and soak in onsens (hot springs) post-run. Earn a dual UNESCO badge by pairing it with Spain’s Camino de Santiago.

Cinque Terre Trail, Italy

Italy’s Ligurian coast glimmers with this 11-kilometre cliffside route linking five pastel villages. Steep stone steps and vineyard terraces demand agility, though. Visit in spring or autumn to dodge crowds and sniff up sea breeze scented with lemon blossoms.

Laugavegur Trail, Iceland

Iceland’s 55-kilometre otherworldly route takes you across geothermal vents, rainbow mountains, and glacial valleys. July and August are the only safe months. Join the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon for camaraderie.

Lagunas Altas Trail, Chile

Patagonia’s 23-kilometre loop in Chacabuco Valley is home to glaciers, lenga forests, and condor sightings. Summer (December–March) brings milder weather. Access via the scenic Carretera Austral—a remote gem for solitude seekers.

Alta Via 1, Italy

Trek Italy’s Dolomites on foot and pass limestone spires and wildflower meadows. Shorter segments like Lago di Braies to Passo Giau offer 16–24 kilometres of high-altitude thrills. June–September is prime time; book rifugi early and pack sturdy shoes.

Eiger Ultra Trail, Switzerland

Circle the Eiger’s North Face on this 35-kilometre route starting in Grindelwald. Glacial valleys and cow-dotted pastures define the Swiss Alps. July races draw elites, but June–September is ideal for independent runs. Train for 2,500 metres of elevation gain.

Kalalau Trail, Hawaii

Kauai’s 18-kilometre coastal trail demands grit: navigate cliffs, waterfalls, and mud to reach Kalalau Beach. Permits are required beyond Hanakapi’ai. May–October offers drier conditions. Reward yourself with a swim in turquoise waves.
