If your ideal beach holiday involves more than lounging on the sand, a new study has identified the world’s best coastal destinations for travellers who crave variety.

A May 2026 report by small-ship cruise operator Sail Croatia ranked more than 40 beach destinations according to the range of experiences available beyond the shoreline. Researchers considered factors including the number of beaches, nearby excursions, water-based activities, adventure sports, historical attractions, food experiences and nature tours before assigning each destination a score out of 100.
Italy’s Sardinia claimed the top spot with a perfect score of 100, thanks to its remarkable mix of beaches, cultural attractions and outdoor adventures.
Home to more than 540 beaches, the Mediterranean island offers far more than seaside relaxation. Visitors can explore ancient Nuragic stone towers, wander through mountain villages, discover archaeological sites dating back thousands of years or join one of hundreds of nature excursions, including birdwatching trips to coastal wetlands where flamingos gather.
South Africa’s Cape Town secured second place, earning recognition as one of the world’s leading coastal destinations for adventure.
Although it has only 11 major beaches included in the study, the Mother City stood out for its impressive selection of nearly 700 adventure and extreme sports activities. From paragliding off Lion’s Head and kitesurfing in Table Bay to shark cage diving, Cape Town offers plenty for thrill-seekers. The city also boasts more than 1,400 nearby day trips, ranging from visits to the Cape Winelands to penguin colonies and scenic nature reserves.
Crete completed the top three. Greece’s largest island combines 255 beaches with more than 1,000 excursions, including hikes through Samaria Gorge, visits to the Palace of Knossos and traditional mountain villages. The island’s rich Minoan and Venetian history, together with its abundance of wildlife experiences, helped secure its high ranking.
Mexico’s Cancún placed fourth, offering the greatest number of nearby excursions of any destination in the study. Travellers can explore ancient Maya sites such as Chichén Itzá, swim in cenotes or visit the coastal ruins of Tulum, while adrenaline lovers can choose from hundreds of activities including zip-lining and whale shark encounters.
Thailand’s Phuket rounded out the top five. The island impressed with its extensive selection of water-based experiences, island-hopping excursions and kayaking adventures through limestone caves, alongside a vibrant local food scene.

According to Sail Croatia, the findings reflect a growing appetite for holidays that combine beach time with culture, adventure and exploration. Rather than spending an entire trip at a single resort, many travellers are increasingly looking for destinations that offer easy access to historical landmarks, outdoor activities and memorable day trips.
