Here are some of the province’s most scenic woodland areas open to visitors:
1. Newlands Forest, Cape Town

Newlands Forest is a favourite for beginners and more experienced hikers alike, with routes that link towards Kirstenbosch and Constantia Nek.
- Distance from Cape Town: about 5km.
- Location: Eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Newlands.
- Tip: Go early and follow the Contour Path if you want a gentler outing with classic mountain-and-forest views.
2. Tokai Forest

The area sits at the base of Tokai Forest and includes a tea garden, while the arboretum itself holds 274 tree species. It is a handy nature fix when you want a forest stop without leaving the city far behind.

- Location: Tokai, in Table Mountain National Park.
- Tip: Make time for the Tokai Arboretum and a relaxed stroll.

CapeNature says Grootvadersbosch spans 250 hectares of indigenous forest, and the reserve’s cabins and camping options make it a proper slow-living escape. The forest is known for its old-growth atmosphere, and the drive alone feels like a soft reset.

- Location: Langeberg region, near Heidelberg and Swellendam.
- Tip: Pack for a full day or stay overnight if you can.
4. Tsitsikamma Section, Garden Route National Park

This stretch is home to temperate high forest rolling down to the sea, which gives it a wild, cinematic feel that is hard to beat.
- Distance from Cape Town: about 615km.
- Location: Storms River Mouth and the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park.
- Tip: Base yourself near Storms River Mouth if you want to make the most of the trails, canopy walk-style adventures and towering indigenous forest.
5. Platbos Forest, near Stanford

Platbos is known as Africa’s southernmost indigenous forest and is privately owned, with a strong focus on conservation and eco-tourism. Expect ancient milkwood trees, quiet pathways and a deep, almost storybook stillness that makes it ideal for forest bathing or a mindful reset.
- Distance from Cape Town: about 160km (around 2 to 2.5 hours).
- Location: Between Stanford and Gansbaai, in the Overberg region.
- Tip: Book a guided forest walk or overnight stay to fully experience it.

The Knysna Forest is one of South Africa’s largest indigenous forests, known for its ancient yellowwood trees, dense canopy and rich biodiversity. It is ideal for longer, slow-paced walks where you can fully switch off and take in the sounds and stillness of the forest.
- Distance from Cape Town: about 500km (roughly 5 to 6 hours).
- Location: Knysna, along the Garden Route National Park.
- Tip: Start with the Garden of Eden boardwalk if you want an easy, accessible introduction, then explore deeper trails like Millwood for a more immersive experience.
Whether you are after a quick weekday reset or a longer road-trip moment, these forests deliver plenty of fresh air, shade and that lovely ‘just one more walk’ energy.
