A Melkbosstrand dog owner is calling for greater accountability after her Labrador retriever was seriously injured in an alleged attack by three off-leash dogs at Holbaai Beach on Sunday.

According to IOL, the incident has renewed concerns about responsible pet ownership and compliance with leash regulations at public beaches.
Jenny Winchester said she was walking her dog, Spencer, back towards the parking area when she noticed three dogs approaching from the dunes.
Concerned for their safety, she kept Spencer on a lead and attempted to move away. However, the dogs reportedly followed them onto the beach before surrounding and attacking her pet.
Winchester said at least two of the dogs repeatedly bit Spencer while she shouted for help. She alleged that a woman believed to be the dogs’ owner was present during the incident but did not intervene or attempt to restrain the animals.
The attack continued for several moments before the dogs eventually disengaged, allowing Winchester and Spencer to reach their vehicle.
Spencer was taken to a veterinarian for emergency treatment, where he was diagnosed with multiple deep puncture wounds and significant trauma to his tail.

According to Winchester, the injuries required a splint bandage, and the veterinarian warned that further treatment, including possible surgery, may still be necessary if the tail does not heal properly.
Following the incident, Winchester filed a police report and documented the scene. She also photographed a white Jeep Wrangler, registration CAA 170-214, which she believes is linked to the owner of the attacking dogs.
She is urging authorities to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable, describing the attack as entirely preventable.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of keeping dogs under control in public recreational spaces. Pet owners visiting beaches and nature areas are encouraged to familiarise themselves with local by-laws regarding leashes and responsible pet ownership to help ensure the safety of both people and animals.
