In May, Getaway Senior Features Writer Lisa Abdellah travelled to Kenya for an advanced press screening of AFRICA: EARTH’S WILD HOME, a seven-part series nearly four years in the making that captures more of Africa than any production before.
After the screening, Showrunner Gavin Boyland, an award-winning showrunner renowned for his leadership in natural history film-making at BBC Studios Natural History Unit, revealed that the ultimate goal is to box set Earth, creating a season on each continent. Africa’s the most logical place to start. People associate the continent with spectacular wildlife. This series shows a different side of the continent: new species, never-before-documented behaviours and its most spectacular ecosystems.
In this interview, Lisa chats with Gavin about the filming firsts, African contributors and Africa-led projects and cutting-edge technology that bring the series’ epic stories of resilience, drama and survival to life.
AFRICA: EARTH’S WILD HOME will premiere on National Geographic (DStv Channel 181) on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October from 3.40 pm. The series will also be available on Disney+.
