Spilling the tea in Knysna at The Spice & Tea house

South Africa, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, expansive beaches, diverse wildlife, intriguing history, exceptional wines, and unique culinary delights, is a favoured destination for tourists seeking an enriching experience.

While South Africa does cultivate black tea (camellia sinensis) in the Eastern Cape Province, benefiting from its high rainfall, the country’s overall production remains relatively small, accounting for less than 0.1% of global output in 2008. Unfortunately, the black tea sector in South Africa has faced significant financial challenges, resulting in the closure of numerous tea estates.

Nonetheless, South Africa’s most renowned and globally exported teas are rooibos and honeybush. These herbal infusions, naturally devoid of caffeine, are indigenous and endemic to the Western Cape province and cultivated exclusively within its boundaries.

The Western Cape province boasts a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm, rainy winters influenced by prevailing westerly winds, and dry, hot summers. In contrast, much of the rest of South Africa is predominantly arid or semi-arid, with vast desert landscapes and scrublands dominating the scenery. Consequently, the Western Cape’s favourable conditions make it an ideal environment for cultivating rooibos and honeybush plants.

Rooibos plantations are typically found in the Cederberg region, a picturesque mountainous area. If you enjoy learning about all things tea (over a cup of…tea) then we might have the spot for you in Knysna.

Here are some of the tea blends you can try out while visiting them:

Spice-infused Delight: The Exquisite Indian Masala Chai

Experience the enchantment of a timeless Indian tradition with Masala Chai, a classic tea blend meticulously crafted with a medley of aromatic spices. This exquisite beverage combines the rich flavours of cardamom, clove, black pepper, cinnamon, and ginger with the bold essence of black tea (Camellia Sinensis). Traditionally enjoyed with the indulgent additions of milk and sugar or honey, Masala Chai is a true delight for the senses.

As you pour this magnificent brew, you’ll be greeted by a captivating deep amber hue that tantalizes the eyes. The aroma dances in the air, offering a malty and spicy bouquet with each spice lending its unique character to the symphony of scents.

But it is in the taste that Masala Chai truly shines. The complex flavour profile is full-bodied and infused with a delightful spiciness. Each spice releases its volatile oils, revealing its distinct characteristics that mingle harmoniously with the tea, creating a sensory masterpiece for the palate.

Brewing: Bring the water to a rolling boil at 100 degrees Celsius. Allow the tea to steep for approximately 5 minutes, extracting all the exquisite flavours and aromas that make this blend so special.

Serving: To complement this brew, consider pairing it with a delectable vanilla biscuit, adding an extra kick of spice, or opting for a delicate butter cookie that allows the tea to take centre stage. For a truly indulgent experience, savour it alongside a milk tart or a dense, moist Madeira cake, allowing the flavours to intertwine and create moments of pure bliss.

The Delicate Marvel: Honeybush Tea

Nestled within the natural landscapes of South Africa, Honeybush (Cyclopia) thrives as a cherished member of the Fynbos family. Stretching from Piketberg to Port Elizabeth, this remarkable tea takes its name from the fragrant yellow flowers that bloom in spring, infusing the air with sweetness and giving the tea its naturally delightful taste. Honeybush is a single-origin tea, cultivated in the Garden Route area from the subalternate species, showcasing the unique terroir of the region.

As you prepare to indulge in this exquisite tea, a visual delight awaits. Its hue sparkles with shades of rose gold and copper, acquired through a fermentation process akin to that of rooibos. Allow the inviting aroma to envelop your senses – a musky, sweet fragrance that captures the essence of the fynbos landscape.

With each sip, Honeybush reveals its character on the palate. Its taste is a symphony of sweetness intertwined with fynbos notes, accompanied by a hint of muskiness. The flavours unfold gracefully, offering a sensory journey that truly embodies the essence of this remarkable tea.

Honeybush boasts a plethora of health benefits, similar to its counterpart Rooibos and more. Abundant in antioxidants, including the notable mangiferin, this tea strengthens the immune system, protects against inflammation, accelerates metabolism, and may aid in preventing and slowing down cancer. Additionally, its natural plant estrogens contribute to potential benefits in women’s bone density and cardiovascular health. Honeybush is a well-rounded ally, supporting the respiratory tract, alleviating stomach problems, and promoting overall well-being.

Brewing: Bring your water to a boil at 100 degrees Celsius. Allow the tea to steep for approximately 5 to 7 minutes or longer.

Serving: As you savour the delightful nuances of Honeybush, consider pairing it with an array of cakes, biscuits, and confectionery, allowing the tea’s flavours to complement and enhance these sweet treats.

The Enigmatic Elixir: Oolong (Classic) from Taiwan

In the realm of tea, where black tea undergoes full fermentation and green tea remains unoxidized, Oolong emerges as a captivating middle ground. This exceptional tea finds itself partially oxidized or semi-fermented before being skillfully twisted and curled, straddling the realms of both green and black teas. Its allure lies in its fascinating and complex nature, shaped by style, craftsmanship, and terroir, much like the world of wine.

Taiwan stands as a haven for some of the finest Oolong teas. As you embark on this tea journey, observe its captivating hue, reminiscent of olive oil with hints of yellow-green, a testament to its distinctive character. Inhale deeply, and you will be greeted by the alluring roasted and nutty aroma that lingers in the air, a precursor to the delightful flavours that await.

The taste of Oolong unfolds with a toasted nuttiness that dances upon your taste buds. Each sip reveals a harmonious blend of flavours, inviting you to savour the intricacies of this remarkable tea.

Brewing: To achieve the optimal infusion, ensure your water is heated to approximately 90 degrees Celsius. The brewing time can vary significantly, ranging from 3 minutes to 7 minutes or more, depending on the specific style and terroir of the Oolong tea. Allow this tea to unfurl its flavours gradually, as it takes its time to develop its unique character. Multiple infusions can be enjoyed, further revealing the intricacies that lie within each leaf.

Serving: Oolong finds perfect companionship with Chinese, Taiwanese, and Asian cuisine, particularly with dim sum, creating a symphony of flavours that intertwine with culinary delights.

As you appreciate the beauty of Oolong, it is recommended to refrain from using tea balls, as the leaves require ample space to unfurl and expand, transforming into captivating, large leaves. Instead, savour their transformation in a cup or pot, allowing the essence of the tea to envelop your senses.
