8 historic bars to visit in SA

New and trendy bars have a certain appeal, however sometimes it’s nice to retreat to a more historic watering hole to drink in the atmosphere along with a glass of your favourite spirit or ale.

1. De Akker Pub and Restaurant, Stellenbosch

De Akker Pub and Restaurant is Stellenbosch’s second oldest pub. The pub has a variety of craft beer and live entertainment and has seen countless students file in and out of its doors over the years.

2. The Kitchener’s Carvery Bar, Braamfontein

Kitcheners in Jozi has been around since 1906. The bar is the second-oldest in the city and is a favourite hangout for the city’s cool kids and creatives.

3. Buccaneers Sports Pub and Grill, East London

Buccaneers is one pub with a breathtaking view in the city. Any local will tell you, that Buccaneers is best known as Buccs. People who go to the pub will share stories of the legendary parties, DJs and bands that are hosted here.

4. Persies Tavern, Cape Town

Perseverance Tavern also affectionately known as Persies in Cape Town received its official liquor license in 1836. This legendary bar is still operating and serves burgers, wood-fired pizzas and has live music, which attracts a young crowd.

5. Pig and Whistle Inn, Bathurst

The Pig and Whistle is the oldest licensed pub in the country claiming a date of 1832. The bar is based in Bathurst, about 15 minutes from Port Alfred. Although it hasn’t kept its original name, the bar is famous for its fascinating history, stone walls and memorabilia.

The Fireman’s Arms was establishment in 1864. The pub retains a historic ambience with a firefighter theme and serves variety of beers on tap.

7. Barney’s Tavern, Port Elizabeth

This local legend spot Barney’s is situated in the best spot in town, along the beachfront. You can watch all international and local rugby and football games on any one of the big screens in the bar.

8. Rand Club of Johannesburg

 The Rand Club is the oldest private members’ club in Johannesburg. The bar was found in 1887 and progressively it has moved away from being a gentleman only club and now welcomes women and children. It’s situated in the Johannesburg CBD.
