Family fun in Cape Town: activities for the kids this mid-term break

Posted on 6 October 2025 By Zoe Erasmus

Spring in Cape Town is pure magic — the flowers are blooming, the sun lingers a little longer each day, and the city feels like it’s waking up after a long nap.

The mid-term school break is the perfect chance to soak it all in with your kids. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, budget-friendly fun, or creative ways to spend time together, the Mother City has something for every family. Here’s how to make the most of it.

1. Explore the great outdoors

Cape Town in spring is best enjoyed outside. Take advantage of the mild weather with a family hike at Silvermine Nature Reserve. It’s easy enough for little legs but still rewards you with beautiful views and a picnic-perfect dam at the top. Alternatively, Deer Park near Vredehoek offers shady trails, a café, and open lawns for running wild.

If you’re after a full day outdoors, head to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The kids will love the Boomslang Canopy Walkway, and you can pack a picnic or enjoy a relaxed lunch at Moyo. Keep an eye out for spring flowers and the occasional dassie sunbathing on the rocks.

And for those sunny days that feel like summer is sneaking in early, you can’t go wrong with a beach day. Muizenberg Beach is a family favourite with warm, shallow waters, colourful huts, and surf lessons for beginners make it a winner.

2. Meet the animals

For kids who love animals, there are plenty of spots around Cape Town that bring them up close to nature. The World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary in Hout Bay is a hit with younger children. Think flamingos, owls, and even playful monkeys.

If your little ones are curious about marine life, take a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront. The touch pool and penguin exhibits are always crowd-pleasers, and the behind-the-scenes tours offer a fascinating glimpse into how the aquarium operates.

For something more interactive, drive out to Imhoff Farm in Kommetjie. Here, kids can meet goats, pigs, and ponies, enjoy a camel ride, or grab a pizza while parents sip a coffee at one of the farm’s cafés.

3. Get creative indoors

Cape Town’s unpredictable spring weather might mean the occasional rainy day but that’s no reason to stay bored at home. The Clay Café in Hout Bay or Ceramic Café in Somerset West lets kids paint their own pottery while you unwind with a cappuccino. It’s a calm, creative outing that doubles as a fun keepsake to take home.

For something more active, visit PlayDate SuperPark at the Waterfront or Bugz Playpark in Kraaifontein. These indoor and outdoor play spaces are designed for hours of entertainment, with obstacle courses, jungle gyms, and themed zones for all ages.

If your children enjoy a touch of theatre, check out what’s on at the Baxter Theatre or Theatre on the Bay, which often feature special school holiday shows for families.

4. Explore local gems

Sometimes the best memories come from discovering new corners of the city together. The Company’s Garden in the city centre is perfect for a low-key morning. Feed the squirrels, grab ice creams, and explore the Iziko South African Museum nearby.

A short drive away, Green Point Urban Park offers bike paths, picnic lawns, and a fantastic playground with climbing frames and slides galore. Pack a ball, some snacks, and make an afternoon of it.

Or hop on the City Sightseeing Bus, which lets you explore iconic spots like Table Mountain, Camps Bay, and the Waterfront without worrying about parking. Kids love the novelty of the open-top bus, and parents get to enjoy the views.

5. Get a sweet treat

No school break is complete without a little treat. Stop for waffles and milkshakes at The Creamery, or enjoy gelato from Unframed in the city bowl. For a wholesome afternoon, take a drive to Noordhoek Farm Village for fresh pastries and a relaxed, family-friendly vibe.

Spring is also the season for outdoor markets. The Oranjezicht City Farm Market and Blue Bird Garage Market both offer good food, great atmosphere, and enough space for kids to roam while parents browse.

Making memories that last

The mid-term break doesn’t need to be extravagant or expensive, it’s about slowing down, exploring together, and enjoying the sunshine before summer arrives in full swing. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, painting pottery, or simply eating ice cream by the sea, Cape Town’s springtime charm makes every family outing feel like an adventure.

So pack a picnic basket, grab the sunscreen, and make this school break one to remember.
