Across the country, the calendar holds a mix of outdoor festivals, live music, theatre, food experiences and community gatherings that reflect both the public holiday and the slower rhythm of the approaching winter season.

Western Cape

Pink Loerie Arts Festival | Knysna

📅 30 April to 3 May

One of South Africa’s most established LGBTQ+ festivals, the Pink Loerie transforms Knysna into a weekend-long celebration of identity, creativity and community. The programme typically includes drag shows, live music, comedy sets and themed parties, alongside its well-known parade. Many events take place in and around the town centre, making it easy to explore on foot while dipping into different parts of the programme.

Woester Avontuur Braaifees | Worcester

📅 30 April to 1 May

Set in the Breede Valley, this festival celebrates one of South Africa’s most recognisable food traditions. Visitors can expect a wide range of braai styles, from classic wood-fired grills to more experimental takes, along with craft stalls, live entertainment and family activities. Its location makes it an easy day trip from Cape Town or a stopover en route to Route 62.

Jive Funny Championship | Cape Town

A long-running platform for emerging comedians, this championship offers a chance to see new voices in South African comedy. Heats and semi-finals often take place in accessible venues such as malls or theatres, with audiences playing an active role in shaping who advances. The tone is informal and energetic, making it an easy addition to a casual night out.

This continental competition brings together top rhythmic gymnasts from across Africa, along with invited participants. Spectators can expect a programme of individual and group routines combining athleticism, choreography and precision. It offers a rare chance to watch the sport at a high level within a local arena setting.

Market Theatre productions | Johannesburg

📅 From 1 May

The Market Theatre’s new-season programming typically launches around this time, featuring a mix of contemporary productions, reimagined classics and locally developed work. Known for its strong ties to South African storytelling, the theatre provides a more intimate cultural experience within the inner city.

Mpumalanga

Misty Waters Music Festival | Secunda

📅 1 to 3 May

Held at Lake Umuzi, this outdoor festival combines multiple music stages with a laid-back, camping-friendly environment. The line-up usually leans toward South African rock and alternative acts, with additional food stalls, craft vendors and social spaces. It is designed as a full weekend experience rather than a single-day event.

Misty Waters Fringe Festival | Secunda

📅 30 April to 2 May

Running alongside the main festival, the fringe programme introduces smaller, more experimental performances across music, spoken word and visual art. It offers a quieter counterpoint to the main stages, with a focus on emerging talent and creative expression.

KwaZulu-Natal

Newcastle Winter Festival | Newcastle

📅 30 April to 3 May

Positioned as a family-friendly regional event, the festival brings together live music, food vendors and local crafts in a relaxed outdoor setting. It tends to draw a mix of residents and visitors from surrounding towns, making it a good entry point into the area’s community culture.

Regional Highlight

World Athletics Relays | Gaborone, Botswana

📅 2 to 3 May

This international event brings together some of the world’s leading track athletes for relay races across multiple disciplines. Its proximity to South Africa makes it a viable cross-border option for sports-focused travellers, particularly those based in Gauteng.

With many events clustered around key towns and smaller cities, it is also a chance to explore regions that are often overlooked outside of peak holiday periods. Planning ahead is recommended, particularly for multi-day festivals and performances with limited capacity.
