The seasons are slowly changing and it’s getting darker, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. It’s just time for a different kind of fun. Here’s where to go and what to experience across the country this weekend.
Cape Town leads with festivals and celebrations
Cape Town’s events calendar is especially lively this weekend, anchored by the much-anticipated Black Coffee Weekender. Curated by internationally acclaimed DJ Black Coffee, the three-day festival brings together global and local electronic artists for a high-energy programme of music, lifestyle experiences, and curated performances across the city. It is one of the country’s most anticipated music events of the season, drawing crowds for its immersive atmosphere and world-class production.
The city also hosts the vibrant Cape Town Pride celebrations, culminating in a colourful parade and Mardi Gras at the Green Point Track on Saturday. The event celebrates LGBTQ+ identity and community through performance, entertainment, and public celebration, creating a festive atmosphere along the Atlantic Seaboard.
For food and drink enthusiasts, the Time Out Market Cape Town hosts the Brews and Beers Festival, where local craft brewers showcase seasonal pours alongside live entertainment. Meanwhile, the Century City Sports Festival continues through the weekend with community activities ranging from fun runs to dragon boat racing, offering a more active way to spend time outdoors.
Johannesburg’s creative and cultural pulse
In Gauteng, Johannesburg’s cultural scene takes centre stage with a mix of theatre, markets, and art experiences. At the Joburg Theatre, a packed programme of productions runs through the weekend, featuring drama, musical performances, and family-friendly shows at one of the country’s leading performing arts venues.
Sunday brings the monthly First Sundays event to the Maboneng Precinct, where galleries and creative spaces open their doors to the public. Expect exhibitions, live performances, and street culture experiences that showcase Johannesburg’s contemporary creative energy.
For a slower Saturday start, the 44 Stanley Neighbourgoods Market offers artisanal food, local fashion, and live music in a relaxed urban setting. Meanwhile, live performances at Soweto Theatre highlight local talent through jazz and community productions, reflecting the area’s strong cultural heritage.
Durban’s coastal lifestyle experiences
KwaZulu-Natal offers a more relaxed pace, centred on outdoor experiences and live music. The Durban Beachfront hosts seasonal summer programming throughout the weekend, including family-friendly activities, fitness sessions, and live entertainment along the Golden Mile.
Just outside the city, the Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market provides a popular countryside escape. Visitors can browse fresh produce, artisanal goods, and craft foods while enjoying live music in an open-air setting.
Evenings in Durban are best spent at The Chairman, one of the city’s leading jazz venues, where weekend sessions feature both established and emerging local musicians.
Nature escapes in the Eastern Cape
For travellers seeking quieter experiences, the Addo Elephant National Park offers guided walks, wildlife viewing, and conservation-focused visitor activities throughout the weekend. The park remains one of South Africa’s most accessible Big Five destinations, providing a refreshing contrast to the country’s urban events with its wide landscapes and abundant wildlife.
