The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has announced its plans for a self-service system to make it easier for South Africans to get passports and IDs.

Home Affairs resumes all passport services

Funds would be allocated to procuring self-service kiosks for passports, IDs and reprinting death and marriage certificates in the department’s 2022/23 budget, said Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza .

These kiosks will be strategically located for easy and safe access even after office hours, to help prevent massive system backlogs. There will also be biometric authentication for additional security.

They may also be placed in shopping centres.

‘Operating Home Affairs offices at malls will obviate the problem of queuing in the sun or rain,’ said Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. ‘We shall start with Menlyn mall in Pretoria, Cresta mall and Southgate Mall in Johannesburg, the Pavilion in eThekwini and Tygervalley mall in Cape Town.’
