According to AeroTime, Joby Aviation has completed the first point-to-point electric air taxi demonstration flights linking John F. Kennedy International Airport with key heliports across New York City.

The piloted aircraft, part of a new class of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, completed the journey in roughly 10 to 15 minutes. By comparison, the same route can take more than an hour by road.

The flights form part of a broader pilot programme led in partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, aimed at testing how air taxis could integrate into existing transport systems.

Unlike traditional helicopters, the aircraft is fully electric, producing zero operational emissions and significantly less noise. This positions it as a potential solution to both congestion and urban noise pollution, two persistent challenges in dense global cities.

The demonstration flights are also part of a week-long campaign designed to simulate real-world conditions, including routes between the airport and multiple Manhattan heliports. While the technology is advancing quickly, commercial passenger services are not yet available. The aircraft is still undergoing certification with the Federal Aviation Administration, a process that will determine when and how these services can scale.

Even so, the implications are significant. With projected travel times under 10 minutes and pricing expected to align with premium ride-hailing services, air taxis could reshape how travellers move between airports and city centres.

For now, the skies above New York remain a testing ground. But the trajectory is clear with urban air mobility is moving from concept to reality.
