Enjoy a drive-in movie at Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas estate

Posted on 15 September 2020

The recent increase in popularity surrounding drive-in movie theaters has been one of the only positives to come out of the coronavirus pandemic. They provide a safe way for large amounts of people to enjoy their favorite movies without having to worry about potentially contracting an unwanted virus.

Now, it looks as though Queen Elizabeth herself has endorsed the idea of drive-in movies as she has converted her country estate in Norfolk into a drive-in movie theater for all to enjoy. The location for this project has been set up in the 24 hectare garden at her Sandringham House, where the queen often spends her Christmas.

The Sandringham House was initially built in 1870 by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Whilst the decorations and furnishings haven’t changed much since the Edwardian days, the stables located on the property have been converted into a museum that houses a variety of royal memorabilia along with a vintage-car collection, according to Lonely Planet.

The pop-up cinema company, Enchanted Cinema have now converted historic royal grounds into a three-day drive-in cinema event. Movies will be shown on a huge 30-metre-high LED screen, with audio being directly transmitted to attendees car speaker via bluetooth or auxiliary input. Guests will also be able to purchase a number of different snacks from vendors who will be on site throughout the three-day experience.

The movies that will be on display, starting on Friday, September 25 are 1917 and Rocketman. On Saturday, guests can enjoy Toy Story, The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody and on the final day of the drive-in movie theater, Sunday 27, viewers will be treated to Moana, Grease and A Star is Born.

Tickets for this unique experience will cost R685 ($41.70). More information can be found by clicking here.
