Videos appearing on social media showing people BASE jumping from Table Mountain have prompted a renewed warning from South African National Parks (SANParks), with the activity prohibited inside Table Mountain National Park.
Smile FM reported [yesterday] that SANParks is cautioning members of the public against BASE jumping and wingsuit activities in the park following the circulation of several videos in recent days.
The warning comes months after a fatal BASE-jumping incident at Platteklip Gorge, where a jumper died following a fall on 5 January.
SANParks maintains that BASE jumping is illegal, unregulated and strictly prohibited within Table Mountain National Park.
The park authority’s position was formally set out after the January fatality, when it said the national park is protected under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
SANParks said activities that present risks to human life and the environment are not permitted in the protected area.
The organisation has again urged visitors and members of the public not to take part in BASE jumping or similar activities within the park and to report suspected illegal activity.
