Fire breaks out at Lower Sabie Rest Camp in Kruger National Park

Posted on 21 April 2026 By Miriam Kimvangu

A fire broke out at Lower Sabie Rest Camp in the iconic Kruger National Park early on Tuesday morning, prompting a swift response from rangers and on-site teams.

The blaze, reported on 21 April 2026, affected parts of the camp’s reception area, including the shop and restaurant facilities. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

Videos and images circulating on social media showed flames and smoke rising from the popular rest camp, one of the most frequented in the park’s southern region.

According to park authorities, staff acted quickly to contain the fire before it could spread to surrounding structures. Their rapid response limited further damage and helped secure nearby accommodation units and public areas.

Emergency protocols were activated as teams worked to bring the situation under control. At the time of reporting, there were no confirmed injuries, and officials continue to assess the extent of the damage.

While incidents like this are rare within the park’s main camps, fire remains a constant management consideration in the broader savanna landscape, particularly during the dry season when conditions can shift rapidly.

Further updates are expected as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
