Follow in the footsteps of a Basotho king on the annual Moshoeshoe Walk

Posted on 8 February 2022 By Anita Froneman

After a year without the annual Moshoeshoe Walk due to the COVID-19 restrictions, both regular and new participants can now finally gear up for the much-anticipated 15th Moshoeshoe Walk, which kicks on 10 March 2022.

This iconic walk of approximately 116km follows in the footsteps of King Moshoeshoe I as he pursued refuge for the Basotho nation in the early 19th century. The audacious move brought together people of different tribes to form one peaceful nation of Basotho. In the same way, this walk is expected to consist of other nations, including Basotho, to continue the legacy of unity and peace.

The 2021 Moshoeshoe walk follows a momentous 2020 walk that included the Lesotho King and King Letsie III, who walked alongside thousands of Basotho and Southern Africans from neighbouring countries. The walk not only heartens the spirit of unity but also exposes fellow Africans to the beauty of the Basotho Kingdom.

The walk will commence at Mekhoaneng in the Leribe District on 10 March and end at Thaba-Busiu Cultural Village on 12 March 2022, in the Maseru District. As usual, the Moshoeshoe walk will focus on giving back to the underprivileged youth from Basotho communities which demonstrates a commitment to the nation.

‘We aim to continue to rekindle the spirit of unity amongst Basotho as it is embodied in the legacy left by its founder Moshoeshoe I,’ says Moshoeshoe Walk Organizer Thabo Maretlele.

Tickets are from R1,000 per person (self-catering) or R1,800 (including seven meals). Tickets are available on Computicket.
