Giant snake spotted climbing tree in Vryburg

Posted on 30 July 2025 By Megan Paulse

A giant snake casually climbing a tree in the Vryburg area has left South Africans shouting ‘Bliksem!’ in unison.

In the now-infamous clip from Boland Snake Removals 24/7 and Pest Control, a man films what can only be described as South Africa’s version of Anaconda slithering up a tree like it pays rent there.

As the reptilian acrobat makes its way higher, the cameraman delivers a masterclass in local commentary, opening with a perfectly timed, ‘Bliksem!’, a word so expressive, it doesn’t even need translation.

‘Liewe donner, die ding is dik,’ he exclaims in Afrikaans, voice quivering with a mix of fear, fascination, and the kind of adrenaline usually reserved for Black Friday at Checkers.

‘Ek dink sy gaan kleintjies kry,’ he adds, casually speculating that the creature may be expecting, because what’s more comforting than knowing there might be more of them?

The video has since slithered its way across the internet faster than gossip at a braai, sparking thousands of views, hundreds of hilarious comments, and at least one WhatsApp group debate about whether this is a sign of the end times or just another Tuesday in the North-West.

As for the man behind the camera, he’s become a local hero overnight.

Rumours are swirling that he might be approached to host the next season of Snakes in the Suburbs, or at least get a free dop from every tavern between Vryburg and Delareyville.

Nature, man. Sometimes it hisses. Sometimes it climbs. And sometimes it just wants to go viral.
