The Cape Town is setting its sights on becoming South Africa’s next esports powerhouse.

According to MyBroadband, the metro has issued a request for information (RFI) to industry players, exploring how gaming infrastructure could be introduced across public spaces. It is an early-stage move, but one that points to a broader vision. Libraries, community centres and recreation hubs could soon double as connected gaming venues.

At the heart of the plan is LAN (local area network) gaming. This format brings players together in shared physical spaces instead of relying solely on online play. The appeal is both technical and social. Lower latency allows for smoother gameplay, while the in-person environment builds a sense of community that is often missing from remote gaming.

The city’s ambitions extend beyond casual play.

Officials are also considering structured leagues, tournaments and even subscription-based gaming services. There is a strong focus on accessibility and safety, with the aim of creating supervised, age-appropriate environments where competitive gaming can grow alongside recreation.

Titles under consideration include globally popular games such as Minecraft and Fortnite, alongside family-friendly options like LEGO games and Just Dance. The mix is designed to appeal to a wide audience while remaining aligned with South Africa’s content regulations.

While still in its exploratory phase, the initiative reflects a broader shift. Esports is no longer seen as niche entertainment. Across South Africa, the sector is expanding, with tournaments drawing players, fans and sponsors from around the country.

Globally, gaming has developed into a multi-billion-dollar industry. Locally, it is increasingly recognised as a pathway to digital skills, new careers and youth engagement, particularly in urban areas where connectivity continues to improve.

For Cape Town, the opportunity lies in combining its existing infrastructure with a growing digital culture. If realised, the plan could see everyday public spaces transformed into competitive arenas. It is here that a new generation of players could log in, level up and compete.
