Kariba Dam wall in Zimbabwe reopens for visitors

Posted on 22 November 2021 By Anita Froneman

The Kariba Dam, owned and operated by the Zambezi River Authority and equally owned by Zimbabwe and Zambia, has reopened the popular dam wall visitor’s section in Zimbabwe after extensive rehabilitation.

Visitors can sign in at the border post (without crossing the border) and then stroll along the wall with beautiful views of the dam and the Zambezi River.

Alternatively, tourists can view the area and the wall from the Observation Point on the main road above Kariba (Mahombakombe) before the Zimbabwe border post.

The dam is the biggest human-made dam in the world in terms of volume, with a staggering capacity of 180 km3 and being 128m tall and 579m wide. The wall is 617m long and 13m wide at its crest, and 24m wide at the base, according to Victoria Falls Guide.

The dam has undergone major reconstruction, including reshaping of the plunge pool and the refurbishing of the spillway gates. The hydro-electric turbines on both sides of the wall produce electricity for both countries.
