Scotland’s first baby capybara born in nearly two decades has officially received a name, following a public vote that captured the attention of animal lovers around the world.

The adorable pup, born at Edinburgh Zoo, has been named Bru after fans were invited to choose from a shortlist of Scottish-inspired names. The youngster’s arrival marked a significant milestone, becoming the first capybara born in Scotland in 18 years.
Since his birth was announced in May, the tiny rodent has become something of a social media sensation. Videos and photos of the pup’s wobbly walks, curious nature and playful antics quickly won over audiences, turning him into one of the zoo’s most popular new residents.
According to the zoo, Bru is growing more confident by the day and can often be seen exploring his habitat under the watchful eye of his parents, Luna and Rodney, as well as his aunt, Cali.
The naming vote was organised by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which operates both Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park. Bru’s name emerged as the clear favourite among four distinctly Scottish options.
Capybaras, native to South America, are the world’s largest rodents and are known for their calm temperament and strong swimming abilities. The species typically inhabits wetlands, rivers and marshes, where they spend much of their time in and around water.
Bru’s arrival forms part of what the zoo has described as a recent “baby boom”, which has also included Scotland’s first zoo-born sloth, a giant anteater pup and several penguin chicks.
For now, however, it’s the cheeky little capybara stealing the spotlight. And judging by the reaction online, Scotland’s newest wildlife celebrity is only just getting started.
