In Colchester, the best way to explore the Eastern Cape is to get out on the water.

River cruises pass towering dunes, birdlife gathers along the banks, and Addo Elephant National Park is just a short drive away. It’s an easy weekend escape with plenty to explore.
Explore the Sundays River
About 40km north of Gqeberha, Colchester sits near the southern entrance to Addo Elephant National Park. The Sundays River winds through the Karoo and the fertile Sundays River Valley before reaching the Indian Ocean here, creating a landscape of green riverbanks, coastal wetlands and sweeping sand dunes.
A river cruise is a good introduction to the area. Operators such as Sundays River Adventures offer guided trips, some combining time on the water with a walk on the dunes. For a more active outing, canoe along the river or try the Nukakamma Canoe Trail, which includes an overnight stay and a paddle of approximately 13km to a cabin and back.
Fishing is another option, with species such as grunter, kob and leervis found in the river. Check local regulations and licensing requirements before casting a line.
Take on the dunes
The nearby Alexandria Coastal Dune Field is one of the area’s most striking features. It’s enormous dunes offer a change of scenery from the river, with sandboarding and sandsledding excursions available for those after a little adventure. Some trips combine a river cruise with time on the sand.
Bring sunscreen and water, and check conditions with your operator before setting off.
Look out for birdlife
The Sundays River estuary and nearby Pearson Park are worth exploring for birdwatching. Waders, terns, kingfishers and other waterbirds have been recorded in the area, although sightings vary with the season and tide.
Pack binoculars and take your time along the river’s edge. Check access arrangements and any entrance fees before visiting Pearson Park.
Add an Addo safari
Colchester’s proximity to Addo Elephant National Park makes it easy to combine a game drive with an afternoon on the river. The park is famous for it’s elephants, alongside a variety of other wildlife.
Explore the self-drive routes in your own vehicle or book a guided safari. A weekend gives you time to experience both the bush and the river without rushing between activities.
Planning your trip
Colchester offers guesthouses, self-catering accommodation and camping options, including stays near the river. It’s easily reached via the N2 from Gqeberha, making it a practical stop on an Eastern Cape road trip.
Book river excursions ahead of time and check current prices, availability and weather conditions with operators. Consult SANParks for the latest Addo gate times and conservation fees.
An escape shaped by water
From river cruises and towering dunes to elephants in Addo, Colchester brings together several of the Eastern Cape’s best outdoor experiences. Spend the weekend exploring, or simply take time to watch the river move through the landscape. Either way, the water is a good place to begin.
