Meet the first black African freedive instructor, Zandi Ndhlovu in Cape Town

Posted on 2 February 2022 By Anita Froneman

Join Zandile Ndhlovu and Roushanna Gray as they discuss diversity and inclusion in the white-dominated ocean space. This exciting event is being brought to life by ocean conservation group Oceaneers, alongside partners Veld and Sea, Thank Goodness Foods and Beverages and Jack Black Brewing Co.

Ndhlovu, also known as Zandi the Mermaid, is the freediving instructor and conservationist behind the Black Mermaid Foundation. She is recognised as being the first black African freedive instructor in South Africa. Having previously started her own Diversity & Inclusion, Human Resources and IR consultancy, Zandi was quick to recognise the lack of representation within the white-dominated freediving space and has since made it her mission to inspire and motivate people of all backgrounds to get into the ocean.

Joining Zandi on stage is Roushanna Gray from Veld and Sea. Roushanna is leading the charge in the foraging movement. Inspired by nature as a true provider, Roushanna started Veld and Sea to inspire people with the opportunity to reconnect with nature.

Both guests this evening have been gaining international attention having recently been featured on Corona’s #FreeRangeHumans Youtube series. These local change-makers are working towards reconnecting humans with their natural world, an important message that is needed to create a sense of compassion toward nature and help inspire conservation. Tickets start from R100 for Oceaneers or R150 for the general public, both tickets inclusive of one free drink. To join the cause and get your discounted ticket, take the pledge and sign up to become an Oceaneer today.

Set up in classic Muizenberg market style, the bar will be running and food vendors will be set up to provide guests with refreshments throughout the evening. Pull in, kick back and enjoy the evening as Oceaneers and co-hosts tackle some of the important issues within ocean-conservation.
