Mystery kangaroo on the loose in Denmark

Posted on 24 February 2022 By Chloe Cowley

A kangaroo has been spotted very far away from home, in fact, on the other side of the world – all the way in Denmark.

The kangaroo was first seen hopping through Øster Ulslev village, 16km from the port city of Rødbyhavn, much to the amazement of villagers. Danish police turned to social media to ask locals: ‘Does anyone know this kangaroo?’ They asked anyone to come forward if they knew where the animal, native to Australia, came from or if it belonged to them.

Local zoos say the kangaroo is not theirs and nobody has reported it missing.

A driver first spotted the kangaroo hopping in a field on 21 February. The driver ‘had the mind’ to film the animal despite the three-second clip being ‘short and grainy’, according to police.

The video drew much attention, with one person commenting: ‘Haven’t they just opened the borders to Australia? I guess it’s just been waiting to come home.’

This is not the first time that a kangaroo has escaped in the area. In 2018, a kangaroo got loose and was on the run for half a day before it was found by its owner. And in 2014, another one escaped from a private animal farm near the village.

The South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police have instructed people to use the non-emergency number 114 to report any sightings or the whereabouts of the kangaroo. The animal is not being labelled as dangerous.
