Hermanus High School learners came to the aid of a paraglider who became trapped in a tree close to the school.

Chairperson of the South African Hang-gliding and Para-gliding Association (SAHPA) Louis Stanford said that the ‘accident happened mid-morning in mild conditions’ while the ’34-year old pilot was flying under radio instruction. The exact reason for the accident is not known, but is being investigated.’

Teachers noticed the paraglider caught in the tree and immediately called emergency services. Some of the teachers went to assist, but he was unfortunately too high for them to reach him.

They devised a plan and with the help of several grade 10 and 11 learners fetched high jump mattresses. The school shared on social media that ‘within moments the tree lined all around with the mattresses.’

School principal Mike Smuts told News24 that ‘before we knew it, the paraglider fell down onto the mats. The way the mats were placed played a great role in the paraglider landing safely on the ground.’
