Pictures: Weekend snowfall in SA

This weekend was a cold one with snowfall on Saturday night over the Eastern Cape, Karoo, Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges.

Storm Report SA posted some of the coldest recorded temperatures on Saturday night, with the chilliest being recorded at Buffelsfontein Farm (-17.5°C), which lies between Molteno and Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape. Barkely East’s minimum temperature was also well below zero at -9.5°C.

Jamestown measured -8.7°C, Elliot -7.5°C and Sutherland -7.3°C. As far as cities go, Bloemfontein recorded an icy -6°C.


Snow fell at Tiffendell Ski Resort in the Eastern Cape and there were reports of frozen water fountain in Queenstown, also in the Eastern Cape. Images of snow in Uniondale in the Karoo and on the top of the Outeniqua mountains in the Western Cape have also been shared on social media.

Another cold front is expected to make landfall tomorrow 23 July and bring snow to areas like the Matroosberg. According to snowreport.com, the area is expected to receive 23.5cm of snow on after after 8am on the day, while Storm Report SA predicts 15cm over the Matroosberg. Tiffindell could receive another 1.6cm (after 9pm), according to Storm Report SA.
