Between uneven tourism, changing climates and every destination having its own unique landscape and culture, it is imperative to find sustainable and smart ways to host travellers and safeguarding locals.

According to BREAKING travel news, organisations in South Africa, Seville and Helsinki have been working with the Data Appeal Company to identify how to transform tourism data into meaningful and sustainable action. This will enable local leaders to plan management tourism ahead of changing travel trends. What does this look like through a South African lens?

South Africa’s Strategy

Tourism authorities will be using a system covering over 10 000 sites across the country to collect data. This includes online reviews, seasonal and event trends and social media activity of tourists sharing their experiences. The collection of data will be able to let planning teams know which sites are doing well and how to coordinate traffic in those places. The same strategy will be used for sites which need more attention and how to drive traffic to those places creating a nationwide balance.

Event planners are also set to benefit greatly with this system. In places with events that attract bigger crowds, they will be able to better plan infrastructure to accommodate the predicted number of guests.

The future of sustainable tourism in South Africa is looking brighter with this strategy and could set an example for other countries to adopt similar systems.
