Reading the term “wine tourism” probably made you clutch your pocket. South Africa is officially the world’s best-value wine destination so you can sit back, relax and read along to help with your booking.

According to Vinetur, South Africa tops the global list for affordable wine tourism in a report put together by Titan Travel UK. You can enjoy a guided tasting for under £12 (around R284) and a decent bottle of wine will only set you back around £3.40 (around R81). But it’s not just about the price.

South Africa’s wine experiences go beyond tasting. You get to immerse yourself in the locations whether that means exploring around the mountainside estates in Stellenbosch or hopping on the Franschhoek Wine Tram as the sun sets behind the vines. That is exactly what people are looking for. It is true that there are several countries around the world that have incredible wine. In fact, France is still the most Googled wine destination (with over 46,000 vineyard-related searches) but in terms of value? South Africa is sitting comfortably on the throne.

When you are tasting South African wine, you’re tasting culture, history and local pride. If you like art? There’s Cavalli Estate in Stellenbosch. If you love a good braai, there’s the Neigbourgood Experience. Not to mention hidden corners like Robertson or Hemel-en-Aarde. Nobody is missing out. With the array of experiences the country has to offer nobody is missing out.

Your next unforgettable wine adventure might be closer and cheaper than you think. There’s no place like home.
