South Africa National Parks Week set to take place next month

Posted on 17 August 2023 By Jordyn Johnson

The 18th annual South Africa National Parks Week, hosted by South African National Parks (SANParks), will occur between 16 and 24 September.

Visitors will be granted free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visits, reports TravelNews. Some parks will extend the week to include two weekends. However, free access doesn’t include accommodation facilities and tourist activities.

South Africa National Parks Week, themed ‘Know Your National Parks,’ has attracted more than 691 418 day visitors across all parks since 2006. CEO of SANParks Hapiloe Sello says that the week aims to foster pride in South Africa’s cultural, natural, and historical heritage protected by the national park system. It further serves to enhance awareness about conservation issues.

Sello emphasised that national parks are significant spaces for sustainable conservation, heritage celebration, and cultural heritage. They contribute to community empowerment through business opportunities and job creation, and South Africa National Parks Week plans to cultivate a sense of ownership of the country’s natural heritage among all citizens.

The public is encouraged to participate in the initiative by visiting the park between 16 and 24 September.
