A South African woman has been arrested at Phuket International Airport in Thailand after authorities allegedly discovered 16 kilograms of heroin concealed inside pet food packaging in her luggage.

According to Thai authorities, the 32-year-old woman was detained on 11 June while preparing to board an international flight from Phuket. Customs officials, working alongside local police and narcotics officers, became suspicious during baggage screening and conducted a search of her luggage.
Officials said they found seven packages of heroin hidden inside bags of dog and cat food packed in a blue wheeled suitcase. The drugs were reportedly wrapped in plastic and tape in an apparent attempt to avoid detection.
Authorities allege the woman was travelling from Phuket to Entebbe in Uganda when she was stopped. Investigators estimate the seized drugs have a street value of approximately 48 million Thai baht (about R24 million).
Mobile phones and foreign SIM cards were also confiscated as part of the investigation. Officials say they are examining the devices while expanding inquiries into possible links to an international drug trafficking network.
The suspect is facing charges related to the possession of a Category 1 narcotic and the attempted export of heroin from Thailand without authorisation under the country’s narcotics and customs laws. She remains in custody while legal proceedings continue.
The case highlights Thailand’s ongoing efforts to combat transnational drug trafficking through its airports, particularly on international routes. Authorities say criminal syndicates increasingly use everyday consumer goods and household items to conceal illicit substances during transport.
Phuket remains one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, welcoming millions of visitors annually for its beaches, islands and vibrant tourism industry. However, Thai authorities maintain some of the world’s strictest drug laws, with severe penalties for trafficking and smuggling offences.
