United Airlines resumes operations to South Africa after 20 months

Posted on 3 December 2021 By Taylah Strauss

After 20 months, United Airlines has resumed operations between New York and Cape Town. The first flight arrived at Cape Town International Airport on December 2 with a special water salute.

Watch:

The route was suspended following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. The airline is now once again offering non-stop tri-weekly flights between New York and Cape Town.

Due to the blanket travel bans recently imposed against South Africa, United Airlines will only be carrying inbound passengers to Cape Town; no outbound passengers are permitted until further notice.

United Airlines is the only airline that provides non-stop transatlantic flights between North America and South Africa, and also produces more flights between North America and South Africa than any other airline, according to Tourism Update.
