Emirates to resume flights from Dubai to South Africa

After temporarily suspending its services, Emirates will resume flights to South Africa starting 1 December.

Emirates, Virgin Atlantic to resume flights end February

The suspension came after news of the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, which resulted in the United Kingdom placing South Africa back on their red list. In what can be described as a snowball effect, many other countries quickly followed suit resulting in a near-blanket travel ban against South African travellers. This had implications for both airline services and passengers, as many travellers were left stranded when these bans took effect.

Emirates imposed a month-long travel ban on inbound passengers travelling from Johannesburg to Dubai, and their operations from Durban and Cape Town were suspended until further notice.

But Emirates announced on Tuesday that it would again resume passenger flights from Dubai to South Africa and not keep the month-long ban in place. However, it will not carry passengers from South Africa to Dubai.

Emirates has not yet specified what the resumption of flights to South Africa entails, and whether or not they would be partaking in repatriation efforts.
