According to The Citizen, the accolade places the Limpopo establishment among the country’s recognised luxury tourism destinations and brings further attention to the Waterberg region, known for its wildlife, natural landscapes and conservation areas.

The awards ceremony took place at the Siam Kempinski Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, on 24 October 2026. Established in 2006, the World Luxury Hotel Awards recognise excellence in luxury hospitality, with winners selected through votes from guests, travellers and industry professionals.

The achievement comes as Shekinah Lion & Game Lodge marks three years since opening on 28 October 2023. The property is situated in the Waterberg District, within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

International recognition for Limpopo tourism

Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba welcomed the award, describing it as an important achievement for the province’s tourism industry.

She said the recognition demonstrated how investment in quality tourism experiences could showcase Limpopo’s natural attractions, wildlife and hospitality while contributing to economic growth and employment opportunities.

The premier also highlighted the lodge as an example of investment translating into tangible benefits for the province. She noted that tourism establishments such as Shekinah could help strengthen Limpopo’s appeal to international visitors while supporting local economic development.

Wildlife encounters and luxury hospitality

According to Lodge Marketing and Communications Manager Eleh Mathobo, the award reflects three years of dedication and teamwork by the lodge’s owners, management and staff.

Mathobo said the establishment’s approach to hospitality was centred on creating a home-away-from-home experience, with personalised services beginning as soon as guests arrive.

These include welcome treatments, assistance with luggage and attentive in-room hospitality, alongside the lodge’s peaceful surroundings.

Wildlife encounters are another feature of the property. Shekinah Lion & Game Lodge highlights sightings of African lions, white lions, white tigers and orange tigers among its distinctive attractions.

The lodge combines these wildlife experiences with luxury accommodation and a relaxed setting, offering visitors a different way to experience the Waterberg.

A boost for the Waterberg’s tourism economy

Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Tshitereke Baldwin Matibe also welcomed the international recognition, saying it reinforced the province’s position as a tourism destination beyond its established agricultural reputation.

The award is expected to help raise the Waterberg’s profile among domestic and international travellers.

Tourism is an important contributor to Limpopo’s economy, alongside mining and agriculture. Increased visitor interest can support accommodation providers, local businesses, restaurants, tourism operators and suppliers, while creating further employment opportunities.

For the Waterberg, international recognition of establishments such as Shekinah Lion & Game Lodge offers another opportunity to attract travellers interested in wildlife, nature and luxury accommodation in Limpopo.
