One day you could be watching whales along the Wild Coast, the next wandering through a Karoo village or spotting elephants beneath ancient spekboom. It is this remarkable variety that makes the province one of South Africa’s best self drive destinations. These five road trips each highlight a different side of the Eastern Cape, making it easy to tailor your next escape.
The Wild Coast escape
Best for: Beach lovers, hikers and laid back adventurers
The Wild Coast remains one of South Africa’s last truly untamed stretches of coastline. Here, dramatic cliffs meet the Indian Ocean, rivers carve their way to the sea and small villages continue traditions that have shaped the region for generations.
Begin in Chintsa, where long beaches and rolling dunes set the tone for a relaxed escape. Continue to Haga Haga, a quiet coastal village perfect for fishing, walking and watching dolphins offshore.
Next, stop at Kei Mouth, where visitors can cross the Kei River aboard South Africa’s only remaining vehicle ferry before continuing north towards Coffee Bay. This backpacker favourite offers excellent surfing, scenic viewpoints and easy access to the famous Hole in the Wall, one of the country’s best known natural landmarks.
Finish the journey in Port St Johns, where hills meet secluded beaches and hiking trails lead to spectacular coastal viewpoints.
The Karoo and mountain adventure

Leave the coastline behind and head inland to discover the Eastern Cape’s Karoo landscapes, where vast plains, rocky mountains and dramatic sunsets create unforgettable scenery.
Start in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa’s fourth oldest town. Its beautifully preserved Cape Dutch architecture makes it one of the country’s most attractive heritage destinations.
Nearby, Camdeboo National Park offers excellent game viewing alongside the iconic Valley of Desolation, where towering dolerite columns overlook the plains below.
Continue to Nieu-Bethesda, a tiny village known for its artistic spirit and the remarkable Owl House. Slow afternoons here are best spent wandering galleries, visiting cafés and enjoying some of the clearest night skies in the country.
The route continues through Mountain Zebra National Park, where visitors can spot endangered Cape mountain zebras, cheetahs, buffalo and a surprising variety of birdlife before ending in historic Cradock, a town rich in Karoo character.
The food and farm route
Best for: Foodies and families

The fertile Gamtoos Valley and Sundays River region produce some of South Africa’s finest citrus, vegetables and artisan products, making this road trip a feast for every traveller.
Begin in Jeffreys Bay, famous for its world class surf but also home to vibrant cafés and local bakeries.
From there, travel inland through Hankey and Patensie, two welcoming farming towns surrounded by orchards and fertile valleys. Depending on the season, roadside stalls overflow with fresh produce, preserves and homemade baked goods.
Continue through the Gamtoos Valley, where many family farms welcome visitors for tastings and farm experiences before arriving in Addo and nearby Kirkwood, both known for their thriving citrus industry.
If time allows, combine the journey with a visit to Addo Elephant National Park, where a morning game drive pairs perfectly with an afternoon of local food and wine.
The heritage journey
Best for: History enthusiasts and cultural travellers

The Eastern Cape has played a defining role in South African history. From frontier settlements to liberation history, this journey explores some of the province’s most fascinating cultural landmarks.
Start in Makhanda, formerly Grahamstown, where historic churches, museums and beautifully preserved Victorian buildings line the streets. The city remains one of South Africa’s leading cultural centres.
Travel to nearby Bathurst, famous for its giant pineapple monument, artisan studios and one of the country’s oldest licensed pubs.
Continue through Alexandria before heading inland to Somerset East, where historic architecture and mountain scenery come together.
End the trip in Qonce, formerly King William’s Town, a place closely associated with the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela and home to several important museums and heritage sites.
Along the way, visitors gain a deeper appreciation of the people, cultures and events that helped shape modern South Africa.
The forest and safari route

This route combines some of South Africa’s finest indigenous forests with unforgettable wildlife experiences.
Begin in Tsitsikamma National Park, where ancient yellowwood forests meet rugged coastline. Walk across the famous Storms River Suspension Bridge, paddle through the gorge or tackle one of the park’s many hiking trails.
Spend a night in Storms River Village, a favourite among adventure seekers thanks to its ziplining, mountain biking and forest walks.
From there, head towards the western entrance of the Baviaanskloof, a UNESCO recognised wilderness area where mountain passes, river crossings and remote landscapes reward adventurous drivers.
Finish the journey at Addo Elephant National Park, where elephants, lions, buffalo, black rhino and spotted hyenas roam alongside hundreds of bird species. Those looking for a luxury finale can extend their stay to one of the nearby private game reserves.
