Celebrate this weekend at the Cape Town Pride parade

Posted on 3 March 2023 By Jordyn Johnson

The annual Cape Town Pride weekend starts tomorrow, the 4 and 5 March. This event gives the LGBT+ community ‘the chance to be visible and speak to the rest of the city’ about what they have already achieved, how far they have come, and what still needs to be done.

28 years ago South Africa decriminalised homosexuality, and 16 years ago marks our country legalised same-sex marriages. Although we have seen steps being made to create equality for all there are groups that still experience discrimination and prejudices, such as the LGBT+ community.

Cape Town Pride is run entirely by volunteers and has provided a platform for the LGBT+ community to ‘campaign for the freedoms that will allow them to live their lives on a genuinely equal footing.’ The platform helps the diverse LGBT+ community to remain visible and represented.

This year’s event will showcase the diversity that this community encapsulates.
