Weird & wonderful national animals of different countries

Some animals are often associated with different countries, such as kangaroos in Australia and the Big Five in South Africa. The national creatures (mythical or real) of various locations worldwide usually showcase special species in these destinations.

However, a few national animals are quite a unique choice to represent the country. Are you wondering what some strange and spectacular species symbolise in various countries? Take a look at a few quirky animals that are associated with different parts of the world.

Indonesia – Komodo Dragon

Showcasing the interesting biodiversity of this country, the Komodo Dragon serves as Indonesia’s national animal. This reptilian creature is native to the Indonesian island of Komodo (which is where it gets its name).

Canada – Beaver

A furry and cute creature that frequents Canada’s ponds and lakes, the beaver is often associated with this country and has been the national animal since 1975. This animal played a big part in the fur trade in Canadian history and is seen as a national treasure.

Wales – Welsh Dragon

As this mythical creature forms part of the Welsh flag, it’s easy to see why this fantastical animal is a symbol in this Great Britain region. It’s been said that the Welsh dragon has been the national animal for thousands of years.

Scotland – Unicorn

Another mystical creature on the list, the unicorn, is seen as one of the strangest national animals in the world. This animal has a large historical significance to the country, including the inclusion of this captivating creature in their national coat of arms.
