First Virgin Galactic commercial space flight takes off

Posted on 30 June 2023 By Jordyn Johnson

Virgin Galactic rocket plane, Unity, launched its first commercial flight, taking its customers to the edge of space.

The BBC said that ‘the 70-minute mission was purchased for the Italian Air Force and the Italian National Research Council.’ The three Italian customers were able to ‘conduct science experiments in weightless conditions.’

The rocket plane launched from Spaceport America and reached 85 km above the New Mexico desert before making its way back down to Earth.

Sir Richard Branson plans to start sending up the almost 800 people who purchased tickets to ride on Unity. Some ticket holders have been waiting for more than a decade for their chance to visit the edges of space.
