A 39-year-old employee of Gondwana Private Game Reserve, located just outside Mossel Bay, was tragically killed by an elephant on the morning of Monday, 22 July.

According to Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, spokesperson for the KwaNonqaba Police Station, eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred around 08:00 while the staff member was out on the reserve grounds. He was trampled and mauled by the elephant.
Emergency medical services responded but declared the man dead at the scene. The elephant has since been relocated from the area.
Police have opened an inquest docket, and the investigation is ongoing.
Although the victim’s identity is known to the Mossel Bay Advertiser, his name is being withheld until his next of kin have been notified.
