Africa’s skies are ready for takeoff
While Africa currently represents just 2% of the world’s passenger air travel market, the continent is poised for a remarkable surge in the coming decades. According to the latest Long-Term Air Transport Passenger Demand Projections (LTDP) from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), demand for flights from and within Africa is expected to outpace the global average, painting an optimistic picture for airlines and travelers alike.

From a small base to soaring skies
According to Travel News ,Africa is home to roughly one fifth of the world’s population, yet historically, air travel has lagged behind other regions. IATA’s projections indicate that this gap won’t last forever. Revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) — a key measure of air travel demand, are expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 3.2% to 3.9% from the continent, compared with 2.9% to 3.3% globally through 2050.
The LTDP offers three growth scenarios, taking into account factors like population and economic expansion, aviation fuel prices, route capacity, and the global push for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Intra-african routes lead the way
The most rapid growth is expected on intra-African routes, with RPK forecast to rise between 4.4% and 5.2% annually. Flights connecting Africa to Asia Pacific are also set to climb steadily, between 4.1% and 4.7%. Other key international corridors include:
- Africa – North America: 3.5% to 4.1%
- Africa – Middle East: 2.5% to 3.7%
- Africa – Latin America: 2.8% to 3.5%
- Africa – Europe: 2.6% to 3.2%
This trend underscores a growing appetite for both business and leisure travel across the continent and beyond.
What it means for travelers and airlines
For airlines, the data signals both opportunity and responsibility. Expanding routes within Africa could open up previously underserved markets, while increased connectivity to Asia, North America, and Europe promises higher revenue streams. For travelers, it may mean more options, competitive fares, and the chance to explore Africa in ways not previously possible.
