Crocodiles on the loose in barberton
Barberton residents got an unexpected dose of adrenaline this week when seven crocodiles went on an unplanned adventure through the town. These weren’t baby crocs – locals reported beasts ranging from roughly 2.5 to 3 metres in length making their way along the R40.

According to The South African ,the escape unfolded on the night of Thursday, 19 March 2026, when the reptiles broke free from a nearby farm through a cut fence. It didn’t take long before they were spotted by commuters and reported to Hi-Tech Barberton at around 21:00. Social media quickly lit up with astonished locals sharing photos and videos of the scaly escapees, with one Twitter user joking, “Just your average Thursday night in Barberton… crocodile crossing edition.”
Coordinated capture operation
Authorities acted swiftly. Hi-Tech Barberton teamed up with POLSEC and the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Board to track and secure the runaway crocs. Their first sweep managed to round up six of the eight escapees, though sadly one had been struck by a vehicle along the route, reducing the total number in need of rescue to five.
The operation, described as “methodical and calm” by officials, lasted until 23:30. But the final chapter of the saga came just after midnight on Friday, 20 March 2026, when the remaining two crocs were located at a local dumping site and safely captured.
What happens to the crocodiles now?
All seven crocs are now in the custody of the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency. Officials are conducting thorough assessments to determine their exact size, weight, and overall health. Whether they’ll return to the original farm or be relocated to a secure wildlife facility is still under consideration.
This unusual escape serves as a reminder of past incidents, like the adult crocodile captured at a South African Police Service station near Mandeni in KwaZulu-Natal – proving that crocs, no matter how majestic, can surprise us when least expected.

Authorities urge the public to stay calm if they encounter a crocodile on land. Maintain a safe distance, back away slowly, and avoid sudden movements. Most importantly, contact local authorities immediately rather than attempting to intervene.
