The everyday visa just got pricier
The most common visa for South Africans is the standard six-month visitor visa. This is the one used for holidays, seeing family, or quick trips. That fee will rise from £127 to £135.
On paper, it’s a small jump. In reality, for South Africans paying in rand, it edges closer to just over R3,000, depending on exchange rates.
And for travellers who prefer longer validity to avoid repeated applications, the increases are more significant:
- Two-year visa: £506
- Five-year visa: £903
- Ten-year visa: £1,128
For families travelling together, those numbers stack up quickly. It’s no longer just the flights and accommodation that need careful budgeting, but the paperwork too.
Even quick stopovers will cost more
It’s not just tourists heading to London or Manchester who are affected. Transit visas are also going up, meaning even passing through the UK will cost more.
Then there’s the Electronic Travel Authorisation, known as the ETA. This system has become a standard requirement for many travellers, and its fee is increasing from £16 to £20.

Applications submitted before 8 April 2026 will still be processed at the current rates. After that, the new fees apply across the board. For anyone already planning a UK trip, it may be worth fast-tracking your application.

While visa costs are climbing, there is some good news on the travel front.
British Airways has confirmed it will increase its flights between London Heathrow and Cape Town, introducing a third daily flight from December 2026. The move forms part of a broader expansion of its long-haul network, driven by strong demand for international travel.
For South Africans, especially those in the Western Cape, this could mean more flexibility and potentially more competitive flight pricing in the long run.

For Joburg travellers eyeing London shopping streets, students heading to UK campuses, or families planning reunions abroad, the message is clear: expect to pay more.
