Tourists wheel suitcases across its platforms, commuters rush for trains, and international travellers pass through one of Europe’s busiest transport hubs without seeing the complex operation unfolding behind the scenes.
Now, a new season of National Geographic’s Amsterdam Central 24/7 is pulling back the curtain once again.
The documentary series returns with a closer look at the workers who keep the historic station functioning around the clock. From safety officers and station managers to outreach workers and maintenance crews, the show follows the people responsible for keeping Amsterdam moving, often under intense pressure.
The 135-year-old station, widely recognised as one of the Dutch capital’s architectural landmarks, is currently undergoing the largest renovation project in its history. Despite the ongoing construction, trains continue to arrive and depart daily while thousands of passengers pass through the station each hour.
The new season highlights the logistical balancing act required to keep everything running smoothly.

Among the featured stories is SAIL Amsterdam, the world-famous nautical festival held every five years. During the event, around 800 historic ships travel along the IJ waterfront near the station, drawing massive crowds and adding an estimated 150,000 extra travellers in a single day. Station teams are tasked with managing crowd control and ensuring public safety as visitors flood the transport hub after the evening fireworks.
Another episode follows operations inside the station’s UK Terminal, where staff oversee high-speed rail departures to London while navigating strict security procedures and tight schedules.

The series also focuses on the station’s human side. Safety and service officers assist tourists facing emergencies, while outreach workers support people experiencing homelessness who seek temporary refuge in the station. Their work ranges from helping individuals secure shelter and identification documents to arranging train tickets home.
Viewers will also get access to the world’s largest underground bicycle parking facility beneath the station, where teams work to remove abandoned bicycles while construction continues below the tracks.
At its core, Amsterdam Central 24/7 blends large-scale logistics with personal stories, offering a rare glimpse into the people who keep one of Europe’s busiest railway stations operational every hour of the day.
The new season premieres on National Geographic (DStv 181, StarTimes 220) on Mondays at 18:50 CAT from 25 May to 29 June 2026.
